World of Warcraft Upgrades and Item Upgrading
Upgrades boost the value of certain numeric stats on armor, weapons and rings. They also boost extra bonuses like damage from PvE and crit chance.

Components
Upgrade components are items that can be put into armor, weapons and trinkets in order to provide an extra stat boost or effect while they're in use. Upgrade components can be inserted into equipment with a slot for them; the item must be at least upgraded to the blue level to allow a component to be used. Upgrade components, unlike other mods can only be applied only once. They are not able to be replaced or applied several times. Infusions and enrichments are a kind of upgrade component used to upgrade non-amulet legendary and Ascended equipment, as well as some non-ascended items. When an item is upgraded the upgrades are applied from lowest to highest.
